How do we provide early literacy support for families/caregivers?
How do we provide early literacy support for service providers?
- Our role in emergent literacy is to identify, assess and provide intervention for children with developmental, social, emotional and behavioural needs aged 0 to 6 years (prior to Grade 1 entry)
- We recognize that children with developmental delays, disorders and social/emotional/behavioural challenges are “at risk” for literacy development
Who do we serve (our target population)?
- Children from 0 to 6 years of age whose parents, child care centres or home child care providers have expressed that intervention may be required
Where can you find us?
- Services available to any licensed early learning or child care setting (centre or home child care) in Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, North Dumfries and Wilmot Township upon request of caregivers, parents and therapists through the Special Needs Access Point (519-741-0076)
- Referrals are made through the Special Needs Access Point (519-741-0076)
How do we provide early literacy support for families/caregivers?
- Help families to access subsidy programs
- Find quality child care
- Make referrals to other services, programs and agencies
- Provide information regarding community resources and services, child development, behaviour management strategies
- Assist families in preparation for the transition to elementary school
How do we provide early literacy support for service providers?
- Complete functional assessment to identify the child’s strengths and needs
- Collaborate with the family, ECE’s and other agencies involved with the child, to coordinate individual program plan for child so all team members are consistent
- Monitor growth and development
- Provide transitional support to children entering preschool and when entering school
- Give information, training, resources and materials to ECE’s and families
- Help centres access appropriate enhanced staffing services
